Summer was painted in a light-filled penthouse studio overlooking the rooftops of Vienna. Surrounded by glass, I watched summer unfold in all its intensity—scorching heat, sudden storms, and the changing rhythms of the city. The studio itself became part of the painting. Every afternoon, it grew so hot that I simply couldn’t paint. Between two and six o’clock, I would retreat to the rooftop and surrender to an involuntary siesta, waiting for the air to cool. That slower rhythm found its way into the work itself.
For me, summer is a season of openness. It invites us to slow down, gather around a table, swim, rest, and embrace intimacy in all its forms—with ourselves, with others, and with the world around us. This painting celebrates not only the abundance of summer, but also its invitation to let go—to trust that not every moment needs to be productive in order to be meaningful.
